What it is

Sightcast Micro Dragon Tails are micro-sized, tapered fly-tying tails cut from a flexible “dragon tail” style strip. In the water they don’t just sit there like a stiff tail; they snake and undulate with very little movement from you. You can cut them to length, so you can dial in anything from a short wiggle tail on a small hook to a longer profile on a micro streamer.

What to tie with it

Use them primarily as tails on flies, especially when you want built-in motion without adding bulk. They’re at home on micro streamers and smaller trout and bass patterns, and they also fit well into topwater builds where you want the tail to keep working while the fly is sitting or twitching. Most tyers simply tie them in as a tail, then trim to length for the hook size and the profile they’re after.

Flies and the fish they're for

These are commonly tied into a Matt’s Midge style pattern for trout, especially in stillwater and small creeks where a subtle, wiggling tail can be the trigger. They also show up in a Dragon Tail Gurgler, which is fished as a topwater option for bass and a range of inshore saltwater species where a surface fly with a moving tail draws attention. More broadly, Micro Dragon Tails are used in small baitfish and wiggle-tail style patterns for trout and bass, and scaled-down versions of the same idea get used for inshore fish like redfish and juvenile tarpon.

How it compares

Compared to the original Dragon Tails, the Micro Dragon Tail is simply smaller, coming in a 4-inch length, which fits better on compact hooks and smaller-profile patterns.
