On the hook it’s easy to cut to shape, easy to tie in, and it collapses and swims with a lot of movement in the water.

What to tie with it

Use it for streamer wings and collars when you want a fly to breathe and pulse, and it’s a natural fit for both freshwater and saltwater builds. It also works well for bonefish fly bodies and wings, and tyers commonly use it for shrimp tails, tarpon-style collars, and even as a tail material on larger “toad” style patterns where you want motion even at rest.

Flies and the fish they're for

Tie it into a Silveynator Tube Fly for steelhead, where that flowing wing and collar come alive on the swing in rivers. In saltwater, it fits right into a Gotcha Shrimp profile for bonefish on flats, where a soft wing and tail helps the fly look alive with short strips. It’s also at home on a Wooly Bugger for trout and smallmouth in streams and lakes, especially when you want a fuller, more mobile wing or collar than a stiffer hair.

How it compares

Compared to Extra Select Craft Fur, arctic fox is softer and gives more movement, while craft fur is stiffer and holds up better over time. Many tyers also swap arctic fox in anywhere they’d normally reach for marabou or craft fur when they want a similar lively action but in a different, easy-to-handle hair patch.

Fl.
